Chelsea great Lampard named Derby County manager

Image
Latest News RSS feed Chelsea great Lampard named Derby County manager Chelsea great Frank Lampard has taken his first step into management with his appointment at Championship club Derby County. Lampard emerged as a frontrunner at the weekend and swiftly became the favourite when he revealed Derby's interest. He signed a three-year contract on Thursday. The Rams were on the lookout for a new manager after Gary Rowett departed for Stoke City in the wake of Derby's play-off semi-final defeat to Fulham. Lampard ended his playing career in 2016, as two brief spells with Manchester City and New York City followed his remarkably successful 13-year spell at Chelsea. While some are likely to point at his lack of experience, the 39-year-old is confident in his abilities after learning from the likes of Jose Mourinho and Carlo Ancelotti. Real Madrid v Liverpool: Salah has foundations in place for Ballon d'Or challenge HOLD FOR THURS 9AM

Image
Latest News RSS feed Real Madrid v Liverpool: Salah has foundations in place for Ballon d'Or challenge HOLD FOR THURS 9AM It was always going to take something special to break the stranglehold of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi on the Ballon d'Or. The pair have shared the last 10 prizes equally and have only failed to occupy the top two spots together once during that period of dominance. Fortunately for Liverpool as they prepare to take on Real Madrid - and Ronaldo - in the Champions League final, they have someone a bit special at their disposal. Mohamed Salah has been a revelation on Merseyside, scoring 44 goals in all competitions this season and forming part of Liverpool's fearsome attacking line-up alongside Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane. The trio have combined for 29 goals during the club's run to Saturday's final in Kiev and, in a climate where the world's best players are changing hands for nine-figure sums, the £36.9million paid by Liver...

Any club would want Buffon, says PSG president

Image
Latest News RSS feed Any club would want Buffon, says PSG president Any club would want Gianluigi Buffon, but Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi insists Alphonse Areola will remain the first-choice goalkeeper at Parc des Princes. Buffon bid farewell to Juventus as an illustrious 17-year stay in Turin came to an end on Saturday when he made his final appearance for the club in a 2-1 victory over Verona. The 40-year-old was given an emotional send-off by team-mates, opposition players and fans before Juve celebrated their seventh successive Scudetto at Allianz Stadium. A move to PSG has been touted for Buffon, and while Al-Khelaifi admitted the veteran keeper would be a benefit for any club, he stated PSG will keep the faith with youth product Areola next season. "Buffon is a fantastic goalkeeper. But Areola is our starter and he will be next season as well," Al-Khelaifi told L'Equipe. A special and emotional send-off for #NumeroUno at Allianz Stadiu...

The 19-year-old is one of Netherlands' most promising young players and has been linked with the likes of Barcelona, Manchester United and Tottenham this season. Ajax chief executive Edwin van der Sar urged the forward last month to stay at the club and continue his development before looking to move elsewhere in Europe. But Kluivert, the son of former Barca striker Patrick, has accused Ajax of trying to force him to extend his contract so they can make more money from a transfer, and is now thinking of moving on soon. "I was more or less told to sign, otherwise I had to leave," he told De Volkskrant. "Then, you start thinking. I spoke briefly to [director of football] Marc Overmars and I feel pressured. "The most important thing for Ajax is that I extend my contract...

Few surprises in Gernot Rohr's provisional Nigeria squad

ESPN FC News Few surprises in Gernot Rohr's provisional Nigeria squad There were few big surprises in Gernot Rohr's provisional Nigeria squad for the upcoming World Cup in Russia, though some players cracked the nod against expectations. NPFL leading scorer Junior Lokosa was widely expected to be included, but there would have been no seismic reaction if he was not on the 30-man list. FC Crotone's Simy Nwankwo, like Lokosa, had not been involved in Rohr's machinations before, and had only recently appeared on the radar of many Nigerians, so was the one surprise pick.
