Tennis star Djokovic backs VAR despite Serbia controversy

Image
Latest News RSS feed Tennis star Djokovic backs VAR despite Serbia controversy Former world tennis number one Novak Djokovic has backed the introduction of VAR at the World Cup, despite seeing homeland Serbia denied a penalty in their defeat to Switzerland. Serbia saw their lead evaporate in a fiery 2-1 defeat to Group E rivals Switzerland in Kaliningrad on Friday. Mladen Krstajic's side were left angered when their appeals were turned down after goalscorer Aleksandar Mitrovic was dragged to the ground in a tangle with Stephan Lichtsteiner and Fabian Schar. While disappointed with the result and VAR's failure to award a spot-kick, Serbia's 12-time grand slam champion Djokovic said he has been impressed with the technology. "It is what it is. I wasn't in a great mood [after the result], but I thought they played well for first part of the game. After that, it was all Switzerland," said Djokovic, who faces Marin Cilic in the Fever-Tree Championships fi...

Loftus-Cheek ready to replace Alli

Image
Latest News RSS feed Loftus-Cheek ready to replace Alli Ruben Loftus-Cheek said he is ready to start England's second Group G match at the World Cup against Panama if Dele Alli is ruled out through injury. Alli picked up a thigh strain in England's 2-1 win over Tunisia on Monday and his fitness is being monitored ahead of the trip to Nizhny Novgorod on Sunday. Chelsea midfielder Loftus-Cheek played the last 10 minutes of England's opening match, during which period Harry Kane scored a stoppage-time winner, and he said he is ready to be part of Gareth Southgate's starting line-up if called upon. "I am happy if I start or if I don't," Loftus-Cheek said in an interview on England's official YouTube channel. An update from the #ThreeLions camp: @dele_official underwent a scan today, revealing a slight thigh strain. The issue will be managed over the coming days. pic.twitter.com/N125T4KIld — England (@England) June 19, 2018 "I will be...

Gerrard handed tough start with Rangers

Image
Latest News RSS feed Gerrard handed tough start with Rangers New Rangers manager Steven Gerrard will start life in the Scottish Premiership with a tricky away fixture at Aberdeen. Former England international Gerrard signed a four-year contract to take charge at Ibrox in May, despite having no previous senior managerial experience. His attempt to break Celtic's dominance in Scotland begins at Pittodrie on August 5, with Rangers travelling to face a club who have finished runners up for the past four successive seasons. As for champions Celtic, they start the defence of their title by hosting promoted Livingston on August 4. Gerrard will not have to wait long to experience an Old Firm derby, though, as the first meeting of the two Glasgow clubs is scheduled for Celtic Park on either September 1 or 2. That game will pit the Liverpool legend against former boss Brendan Rodgers, who has secured back-to-back trebles in his two years in charge of Celtic. The Premiership season ...

Kanchelskis: This is the worst Russia team I've ever seen

Image
Latest News RSS feed Kanchelskis: This is the worst Russia team I've ever seen Former Manchester United star Andrei Kanchelskis has described Russia's World Cup team as the worst he has seen in his lifetime. Stanislav Cherchesov's side kick off the finals on Thursday against Saudi Arabia at Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow before facing Egypt and Uruguay in their remaining Group A matches. There is little optimism surrounding the host nation's chances of reaching the latter stages, though, with Russia winless in their last seven games and ranked 70th in the world by FIFA, the lowest of any of the World Cup competitors. And Kanchelskis, who played for the Soviet Union and later chose to represent Russia, thinks problems within their football set-up have taken their toll. "The football was better organised in those old days," Kanchelskis, who played at Euro 92 and Euro 96, told the Daily Mail. "We had a traditional system. When the USSR broke up, our fo...

Madrid fans want me to stay - Navas

Image
Latest News RSS feed Madrid fans want me to stay - Navas Keylor Navas claimed the support of the Real Madrid supporters as he stated his intention to end his career at the Santiago Bernabeu. The Costa Rica international goalkeeper has been Madrid's first choice in the last three seasons, helping Zinedine Zidane's side to three Champions League trophies as well as the LaLiga title in 2016-17. Zidane's departure at the end of the 2017-18 season cast Navas' future into doubt but he told Marca that the club's supporters are backing him to stay. "The kindness that the fans show me all the time is incredible and I am very grateful to all of them," said the 31-year-old. "Whatever the sporting situation, they are always behind me. In the stadium I always hear the shouts of support that motivate me and when I walk through Madrid people always come up to me and show me their support, they say 'don't go, we love you'. Gracias a toda la afic...
